LOSING WHEN IT COUNTS: RECAPPING ALL 8 SUNDAY GAMES FT: WSU-KENTUCKY

ST LOUIS, MO REGION

8 Kentucky vs 1 Wichita State

The Shockers came into the game 35-0. Let’s start, 3 minutes to play and James Young gets the bucket, contact and all! But WSU’s Cleanthony Early answers back, Early knocks down the mid-range jumper and the Shockers are up 1. But Young for 3…YES!! Kentucky takes back the lead! Under thirty seconds to play, WSU down 4 and Wichita’s Ron Baker… the 3 with a hand in his face…banks in, good! That cuts the lead to 1, They foul, Kentucky makes 1 of 2 so it’s a 78-76 Kentucky lead, WSU ball and Fred VanVleet, at the buzzer… NO! And Wichita State loses their first game since 352 days ago!But it came when it mattered most, in the single-elimination tournament for the title! Kentucky marches on, WSU does not.

10 Stanford vs 2 Kansas

Stanford up 2 already and Josh Huestis gets the tip-in off a teammates’ missed shot, that gave Stanford a 4 point lead. Then Connor Frankamp drains a triple and it was a 3-point game, less than 10 seconds, Kansas ball, and Frankamp, the 3 to send it to OT….NO GOOD! Stanford wins 60-57.

SAN ANTONIO, TX REGION

6 North Carolina vs 3 Iowa State

Let’s start, less than 30 seconds to play, tied at 81 and ISU’s DeAndre Kane gets the layup to put ISU up 2. Now tied at 83, under 10 to play and Kane drives and makes the shot off the glass to give the Cyclone’s a two-point lead with 1.6 seconds to play! So UNC takes it up past halfcourt  and barley calls timeout in time. But when the refs go to the replay monitor they discover that the clock didn’t start in time so when we thought they called timeout with like half-a-seconds it was really like negative half a second. So the timeout doesn’t count, clock runs out and ISU advances to the sweet 16!

6 Baylor vs 3 Creighton

Let’s start, 1st half and Brady Heslip drains a 3 from straight on and That gave Baylor a 9 point lead! Then Kenny Cherry knocks down a 3 for the Bears and Baylor is cruising! Then Royce O’Neal for 3….YES! Then Heslip from the corner…YES! And Baylor crushes Creighton by 30!

RALEIGH, NC REGION (CSD IN ATTENDANCE! [Center Court, about 15 rows up])

8 Memphis vs 1 Virginia

We’ll start, Wahoo’s winning and Joe Harris adds onto that as he knocks down the triple! Then Justin Anderson drives, misses gets his own rebound and then gets the and-one! UVa crushes the Tigers.

14 Mercer vs  11 Tennessee

Tennessee destroyed the Bears. Led by Jarnell Stokes (17 Points, 18 Rebounds, 5 Assists) the Vols won by 20.

SAN DIEGO, CA REGION

8 Gonzaga vs 1 Arizona

Let’s just rename this the Aaron Gordon dunk show. Let’s start 1st half and Nick Johnson throws the alley-oop to Aaron Gordon and Gordon with the reverse jam to put the Wildcats up 18. Then Gordon with the dunk, and-one! Then Gordon gets the slam off an alley-oop again and the Wildcats are just playing with the Bulldogs. Then Gordon with a dunk that nearly brung the house down off of a teammate’s miss, Arizona won 84-61.

12 Stephen F Austin vs 4 UCLA

Kyle Anderson (15 Points, 8 Rebounds, 5 Assists) dominated as the Bruins won in dominating fashion, 77-60.
