    PHILLIES NO-HIT BRAVES

On a sunny Labor Day in Georgia the Phillies’ Cole Hamels, Jake Diekman, Ken Giles and Jonathon Papelon combined to no-hit the Braves in a 7-0 win on Monday. It seemed odd that the Phillies took Hamels out of the game in the 6th when he was doing just fine. Of that Hamels said “Just understanding the situation, every time I went out there I was battling control issues,” Hamels said. “I wasn’t getting ahead of guys. Walking the leadoff hitter will put you in a lot of trouble, and it does. It builds up your pitch count.”

Hamels (8-6) struck out 7 in the win but also walked 5 and hit a batter. The 4 pitchers combined to make the 11th combined no-hitter in league history. “I think having a combined no-hitter is very difficult because guys have to come right in and get the guys out, no matter what the situation is,” Hamels said. “It’s a little more dramatic to be able to see that you’re trying to play the cards as best you can against the lineup.”Clayton Kershaw and Josh Beckett of the Dodgers and Tim Lincecum of the Giants threw no-hitters earlier this year.

Right fielder Marlon Byrd made the play of the day, saving a hit after diving and catching a liner to right-center.

    ORIOLES WALK OFF IN 12

The Orioles won their 12th extra-inning this year after a shaky start from starting pitcher Chris Tillman as Manny Machado hit a lead-off, walk-off homer in the 12th to win. Ryan Webb (W, 1 IP, K, 2 H) worked out of a two-on jam in the top of the 12th to set things up for Machado who slammed Cory Rasmus’ (L, 1 IP, ER, K, 2H) 1-2 curveball to left field, 397 feet for his first career walk-off jam. Adam Jones and Nick Markakis homered earlier in the ball game for Baltimore as well. Josh Hamilton homered and batted in 3 runs for Los Angeles in the loss, their first in 4 games.

The Baltimore bullpen was great giving up only 1 run and 5 hits in 7 innings. “Our bullpen did a terrific job,” manager Mike Scioscia said. “You can’t ask much more from those guys. We couldn’t get that one hit that would get the game on our terms.”

  • JETER SCORES, AL WINS

    JETER SCORES, AL WINS

Derek Jeter went 2-2 with a run in his final all-star game and rising star Mike Trout went 2-3 with a run and 2 RBI earning MVP honors as the AL prevailed 5-3 for their 13th win in the past 17 all star games. Trout was the clear MVP as the 22-year old angel hit the tying triple and the go-ahead double “I think let Mike be Mike. I don’t think people have to necessarily appoint someone to a particular position,” Jeter said. “He’s got a bright future ahead of him. I don’t know how much better he can get, but if he consistently does what he’s doing, then he will be here for a long time.” Miguel Cabrera capped things off with a two-run homer to secure the AL home-field advantage for the World Series. When AL manager John Farrell took Jeter out to give shortstop Alexei Ramirez playing time the captain had a nearly 180 second standing ovation. “It was a special moment and it was unscripted,” Jeter said. “I was unaware of it.” The 14-time all-star, announced this would be his last season this Febuary and will go out with .481 all-star game batting average. The Tigers’ Max Scherzer took the win after a scoreless 5th and Glen Perkins got the save  in his home ballpark. The MVP, Trout, who grew up in New Jersey said he felt honored to play alongside his childhood hero Derek Jeter. “Growing up I was setting goals to myself that when I get — if I ever get the chance to get — to the big leagues, that’s how I want to play,” Trout said. “And the way he carries himself on and off the field, how he respects the game — always hustling, it doesn’t matter what the score is. If they are down 10 runs, he is always running the ball out. That’s how I want to play.”

TROUT HITS 489 FT HOME RUN IN 8-6 LOSS TO ROYALS

Omar Infante said “There was a lot of wind, I just wanted to make contact, do something.” but he did more than make contact with the bases loaded, KC already up 3-2. Infante’s first career GRAND SLAM in 1,286 games gave the Royals a 7-2 lead and by the end of the inning they had tacked on one more off an RBI single to make the lead 8-2. However Jason Vargas gave up 4 runs in the 5th inning shrinking the lead to 2-1 so Kansas City called on their bullpen which pitched 5 scoreless innings to secure an 8-6 win. Michael Mariot got the win, the first of his career pitching 1 1/3 innings and striking out one “We just knew that with Vargas going four innings, we needed to piece it together,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “Mariot did a phenomenal job.” Greg Holland added his 23rd save in the year by pitching a perfect 9th, striking out all 3 batters. CJ Cron hit two homers for the Angels and Mike Trout hit a crazy shot that cleared the fence, the seats, and the walkway before landing in a fountain. “I squared it up. I definitely barreled it,” Trout said. “I was trying to put a good swing on it and got a pitch I could hit. I’m always looking fastball and reacted. I got a heater.”

“We had a lot of great opportunities. We could have easily put our heads down when it was 8-2, but we fought back,” Trout said. “We just fell short.”

  • LINCECUM NO-HITS PADRES

    LINCECUM NO-HITS PADRES

Tim Lincecum no-hit the Padres for the 2nd time in less than a year on Wednesday in a 4-0 win over San Diego. “I’ve always been that guy who will kind of go for the strikeout,” Lincecum said. “I think my first no-hitter I had 13, so I think I was going for those a little bit more often. Today I tried to be a little bit more efficient and take what they were going to give me. They were giving me a lot of groundballs and a lot of pop flies, so I was just going to try to keep attacking the way that I was,” he said. Lincecum struck out 6 and only walked 1. Lincecum retired his 23 last batters. There were a few good hits but nothing that the Giants’ fielders couldn’t handle. Lincecum, a two-time cy young winner is 6-5 this year and the no-hitter was the 16th in Giants history. Lincecum is the 2nd player to ever no-hit the same opponent twice “It’s hard enough to do one,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “To do two, that puts you in a little different class. I couldn’t be happier.” Lincecum was relegated to the bullpen two years ago but was brought back because he could do things like this. “I think it’s been a battle for him at times to make that transformation to what he is now,” Bochy said. “Sometimes less is more, and that’s what I think if anything, hopefully he learned today.”

    KERSHAW THROWS NO-HITTER

2 Cy-Young awards, 3 straight ERA titles, a 20-win season and now… a no-hitter to add to the list of Clayton Kershaw’s achievements. Kershaw dominated the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday, striking out 15 and allowing only one baserunner (a error by shortstop Hanlry Ramirez) as the Dodgers won 8-0. This is only the 2nd no-hitter of the year, Josh Beckett threw one in Phili on May 25th.”I am so amazed,” Kershaw said. “Beckett told me he was going to teach me how to do that, so I have Josh to thank.”

Kershaw (7-2) rung up his first 18 batters. “He had command of everything. I told him between innings: ‘It’s not fair when you have a devastating slider and a devastating curveball in the same night,’” catcher A.J. Ellis said. “And when he does that, nights like this are really possible.”

With a crowd of 46,069 on  hand Kershaw quickly made work of the Rockie batters in the 9th. DJ LeMahieu grounded out, Charlie Culberson flew out to right and Corey Dickerson struck out to end the game and secure the no-hitter.”I’ve seen some great pitching performances, but it’s tough to be any better than Kershaw,” Colorado manager Walt Weiss said.

After the game Kershaw’s teammates dumped two big buckets of gatorade on him. “I started tearing up out there in the ninth inning, just sitting out there catching and watching him throw after he got those first two outs,” Ellis said. “It was pretty special.  It’s something you never forget,” he added. “It’s a game I’ll watch on replays with my kids forever.”
