Honorable Mentions for the best SEC quarterback: Jacob Eason (Georgia) and Austin Allen (Arkansas)
#3 – Nick Fitzgerald, Mississippi State (2,423 yards, 21 TDs, 10 INTs on 361 passes; 181 carries, 1,454 rushing yards, 16 rushing TDs in 2016)
Nick Fitzgerald had an extremely unenviable job last year. He had to come in and play quarterback right after Dak Prescott, who is quite possibly the best player in MSU history. He knocked it out of the park. Fitzgerald isn’t one of the top three best passers in the league, but he makes up for it with his legs. He led the SEC in rushing touchdowns, yards, and yards per carry last year… as a quarterback. If Fitzgerald can clean up his passing game and cut down on the interceptions, he could have a claim as number one on this list.
#2 – Jarrett Stidham, Auburn (1,265 yards, 12 TDs, 2 INT on 109 passes in 2015)
When Seth Russell went down with injury about halfway through the 2015 season, they called on backup Jarrett Stidham. Stidham shined, in his three starts he threw for 934 yards, and had a passer efficiency near 180. Stidham spent last year at a JUCO school, where he was ranked as the #1 JUCO prospect. In December he committed to Auburn. If Auburn’s rushing attack is as good as advertised, Stidham should have the cushion to tear up defenses all year. But, he is unproven, and is not the best SEC quarterback. That honor goes to…
#1 – Jalen Hurts, Alabama (2,780 yards, 23 TDs, 9 INTs on 382 passes; 172 carries, 1,068 rushing yards, 13 rushing TDs in 2016)
He won the SEC and made the national championship game as a true freshman. Case Closed.
NUMBERS SO IDENTICAL
Fitzgerald: 3,877 combined yards, 37 combined TD’s, 10 interceptions.
