CSD MAG TEASER: Who is the most dangerous ACC Coastal team?

Who is the most dangerous ACC Coastal team?

An ACC Coastal team hasn’t won the conference since 2010, and only two of the seven ACC Coastal teams have ever won an ACC Championship Game (the first ACC championship game was in 2005) Last year Virginia Tech, Pitt, North Carolina, Miami, and Georgia Tech finished at the top of the standings, but all five teams lost their quarterback over the offseason. Here are my three candidates for the most dangerous team in the Coastal.

First up, Virginia Tech. This is the obvious one. They won the division last year, but in a surprising decision, quarterback Jerod Evans declared for the draft. He didn’t even get drafted, and many scouts said that he probably would have gotten picked if he had stayed another year. That puzzling decision will cost Virginia Tech. Not only is Evans gone, but Tech had a lot of seniors on the offense that are now gone, especially on the offensive line. The Hokies return the least offensive starters in the ACC. Justin Fuente had a great year one when no one expected it, but year two is going to be harder.

Miami is another one of those teams that lost their quarterback. Brad Kayaa did get drafted though, and Mark Richt returns a lot more than Fuente does. The ‘Canes are coming off of five straight wins to close out the 2016 season, including an impressive blowout of West Virginia in the Russell Athletic Bowl. The big offseason story is the quarterback battle though. With Kayaa gone it leaves a big hole to fill, and Miami has seven quarterbacks on their roster. Right now the favorite is looking like Malik Rosier, who was Kayaa’s backup last year, but with a long time left and a lot of freshman coming on campus, that could change.

My final team is the wild card. Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets went 9-4 last year, but no one really noticed, because they finished 5th in the Coastal. Of course the Jackets will struggle with the loss of Justin Thomas, but they will deal better than most. The Jackets have an experienced backup. Matthew Jordan came in for an injured Thomas and led the Jackets to an upset win over Virginia Tech last year. Not only that, but the Jackets return the most starters of any team in the Coastal. They may be a darkhorse for now, but mark my word, they will contend come November.
