Baseball
It was 2-0 Mississippi State. The temperature was rising. Mike Papi, UVa’s leadoff hitter slowly walked up to the plate. He had decided. He didn’t want to swing for contact, right now the ‘hoos needed a power hitter. The pitcher pitched… “nah” thought Papi, Ball 1. The next pitch was different it was a strike, one he knew that he could hit. He swung, felt a jolt in his arm and thought: Oh god it’s not going to make it. Even though he knew to never turn his head while baserunning he did and he heard a yell from the crowd. The ball was flying over the wall and into the hoo zone. 2-1. Let’s resume 3-2 ‘hoos, Mississippi State batting. Hunter was on 3rd, he could perform the suicide squeeze, he looked over at coach, unsure of what to do and coach signaled him to bunt. Waddell pitched, C.T. Bradford layed down the bunt, Waddell came in to pick up the bunt, 1st or home?, 1st or home? Waddell had decided, home he ran towards the plate, picked up the ball, and committed an error on the transfer from his glove to his hand, scoring Hunter Renfroe. It was tied 3-3. Pirtle was on 3rd and Demarcus Henderson, knowing what to do hit the ball up into the air, sac fly, 4-3 MSU. They were in Charlottesville not Starkville but the chant was going MAROON-WHITE-MAROON-WHITE-MAROON-WHITE! John Cohen walked off the field looked back at the scoreboard to make sure he wasn’t hallucinating, it read MSU 11 VIRGINIA 6. It was true, his bulldogs were 1 win away from OMAHA.
