ACC COSTAL UPDATE

Virginia Tech moved up to first in the Costal with a win over Georgia Tech on Saturday. The Hokies aren’t playing there best football ever and had to rely on a blocked field goal in OT to barley escape Marshall. It wasn’t pretty  but as long as you get the win it doesn’t have to be.  Vt has  a great  defense and sometimes that’s all you need to come out with the W. And sometimes it’s not.

Excluding Duke not a single team in the costal has more than 1 loss.  Miami, UNC, Georgia Tech and even Pitt are sitting on the doorstep. But none of those teams can do this: With a win on Saturday the University of Virginia will move into a tie with Virginia Tech for 1st place in the Costal. Like I said UVA is the ONLY team that can do that. This week the play Pittsburgh.

UVA-Pitt is a game flying under the radar that can shake up the ACC Costal. With a win for Pitt they move into a tie for 2nd. So winner goes to the Top 2. The game will showcase Pitt QB Tom Savage in the 12:30 game on RSN and ROOT sports (according to university website). Savage(861 yards 9 TD’s and 4 INT’s on the season) threw for 424 yards and 6 touchdowns against Duke. Savage leads a talented offensive team including receivers  Tyler Boyd (16 Catches 314 yards and 4 TD’s on the season) and Devin Street (17 catches for 387 yards and 2 TD’s on the year).

But they will be going up against a UVA defense that take away the game against Oregon is one of  the nation’s best statistically. Led by Anthony Harris and Eli Harold. The ‘hoos have to rely on their defense not to get into a shootout because the ‘hoos offense has really yet to find an identity. But Pitt’s D is one of the worst in the country. Pitt enters Saturday’s game No. 102 in the country in total defense, No. 108 in third-down conversion percentage defense, No. 110 in red zone defense, and No. 118 in scoring defense, allowing 41 points per game.

But don’t count UVa out.

CSD’s Pick: UVa 31 Pitt 30
