Oregon Football Penalties

What did Oregon Do?

The NCAA released this statement about what Oregon did wrong.

The representative provided cash and free lodging to a prospect and engaged in impermissible calls and off-campus contacts with football prospects, their families and high school coaches. Additionally, the football program allowed staff members to engage in recruiting activity, which resulted in the football program exceeding coaching limits. Both the former head football coach and the university agreed they failed to monitor the football program.

Basically the representative (Will Lyles) was payed by Oregon (about $25,000) and he helped Oregon coach Chip Kelly recruit players.

What penalties did they recieve?

Oregon will lose 1 scholarship each year for the next 3 years. Oregon will be on probation for three years. Former Oregon HC Chip Kelly is banned from college sports for 18 months but he doesn’t care because he has a 5yr/32.5M contract with the Eagles. In official visits the Ducks will have their number reduced from 56 to 37 for 3 years, and Evaluation days, 42-36 in fall, and 168 to 144 in the spring.

What do I think?

The ducks are lucky, no major penalties, I really thought they would receive a bowl ban just like most people did. Oregon fans can breath a sigh of relief! Oregon football will be okay…
