Tier One
South Florida (9-1) @ #15
UCF (10-0) – 3:30PM ET, ABC (Friday)
Yes, we get it, the committee hates group of five teams, UCF should be contending for a top ten spot, and they barely have cracked the top 15, but the best thing about the New Year’s Six system is that the group of five gets a guaranteed spot. This is practically a New Year’s Six semifinal game, with the winner taking on Memphis in the AAC Championship next week. This will be a game of tempo, with South Florida’s ground game against UCF’s high power, fast paced passing attack. I’m betting on the Golden Knights in that battle of tempos, as Scott Frost and UCF move up to 11-0.
Prediction: UCF 40, South Florida 30
#9
Ohio State (9-2) @
Michigan (8-3) – 12PM ET, FOX
Ohio State could still make the playoff. They got killed by Iowa, and they aren’t one of the four most deserving teams, but if they run the table, beating Michigan and Wisconsin in the process, they will be one of the four best, in fact, they would be favored against pretty much any team in the country right now, except for Alabama. After injuries knocked out the first two in the pecking order, Michigan is now planning on starting third string John O’Korn assuming neither Speight or Peters is cleared by game time. The Michigan defense can hold a candle to anyone in the country, but the offense has struggled, and John O’Korn is not the answer.
Prediction: Ohio State 35, Michigan 21
#1
Alabama (11-0) @ #6
Auburn (9-2) – 3:30PM ET, CBS
Alabama and Auburn, the Iron Bowl. College Gameday will be in town for this one. Massive stakes are attached for this game, both teams still control their own destiny for the College Football Playoff, but a loss would be season-ending for Auburn. The winner will play Georgia in Atlanta next week for the SEC Championship. Alabama would probably still get in with a loss (meaning they have less to play for), the game is at Auburn, and the Tide are dealing with injuries, all signs point to a potential upset… but you never beat against Nick Saban. Give me Alabama to not only win, but cover the spread on the back of their rushing attack.
Prediction: Alabama 33, Auburn 24
West Virginia (7-4) @ #4
Oklahoma (10-1) – 3:45PM ET, ESPN
Gah, what is this game? This would’ve been one of the top games of the week, but after Will Grier’s injury last week, and the Mountaineers subsequent loss to Texas, Oklahoma comes into the game as 20-plus point favorites. In the QB battle between future Heisman winner Baker Mayfield and West Virginia backup Chris Chugunov, I think you know who I’m taking. West Virginia is a talented enough team that I see them covering the spread, especially if Mayfield receives limited playing time due to his actions last week against Texas, but Oklahoma’s #4 ranking should never be in doubt when the Sooners play in the Big 12 Title Game next week.
Prediction: Oklahoma 45, West Virginia 27
#8
Notre Dame (9-2) @ #21
Stanford (8-3) – 8PM ET, ABC
Both of these teams still have a shot at a New Year’s Six bowl, although Stanford will need Washington State to lose if the Cardinal want a spot in the Pac-12 Title Game. Notre Dame came out a little flat last week against Navy, and this week they’ll face another run-heavy team, this time however, it won’t be in the friendly confines of South Bend. This game will come down to how the Stanford defense deals with Brandon Winbush, the center piece of Notre Dame’s offensive attack, and to be honest, to me Stanford’s defense has been just okay this year. Give me Notre Dame to pull off a road win and clinch a New Year’s Six Bowl.
Prediction: Notre Dame 28, Stanford 21
