Germany’s World Cup run came to a perfect end Sunday in Rio De Janerio as “Die Mannschaft” hoisted the World Cup trophy thanks to substitute Mario Gotze’s stunning goal in the 113th minute as the Germans won 1-0 in extra-time over rival Argentina. It looked as if we were headed for a PK shootout but Gotze chested down Andre Schurrle’s cross and slammed it home to win the World Cup for Germany. “It’s incredible. The team did it beautifully,” said Manuel Neuer, the #1 goalie this tournament “At some point we’ll stop celebrating, but we’ll still wake up with a smile.” Multiple players on Argentina had good  chances but none could find their way to the back of the net. “This was our chance, and we felt that way. We couldn’t do it. We have to lift our head and suffer the pain,” Argentinian Javier Mascherano said. “Obviously, the pain is tremendous. We wanted the cup for Argentina.” The cup was a rematch of the 1986 World Cup Final when Diego Maradona led the Gauchos to the victory. The Germans looked to be one of the favorites from the get-go, crushing Portugal (#11) 4-0. And now here they are standing with the trophy.
